The nowadays lightweight, double-breasted coat made of wool or cotton, the so called Pea coat, has been the traditional sailor costume at the time of Napoleon. It was manufactured by the sailors themselves, who made them waterproof by applying a primer - consisting of tar, tallow and turpentine.
